Louis Oosthuizen cut a frustrated figure at Wednesday’s press conference where he announced his withdrawal from this week’s Joburg Open to be held at Randpark Golf Club from Thursday due to an injury he sustained earlier in the week.

Oosthuizen injured his fingers in a freak incident at OR Tambo International Airport where he jammed his fingers between luggage trolleys, leaving him with severe pain which affects his grip on a golf club.

“The body feels great, but I had a different incident this week with jamming my fingers in trolleys at the airport,” Oosthuizen said. “Unfortunately, I don’t think I will be able to play this week.”

As a the only major winner in this week’s field, Oosthuizen’s withdrawal will be seen by many as a massive blow as he was among those that the local fans were most eager to watch play this week. He feels, however, that although his withdrawal is a disappointing development just a day before tee off, his decision will be beneficial to other players.

“You know, I’m here and I was ready to do everything this week. I was actually relieved there wasn’t a pro-am this week because I thought the rest would help,” he said. “But this morning is even worse than it was yesterday so I tried to grip a golf club but there’s no way I can go to my grip position.

“It’s a bit of an unfortunate one, but I don’t want to tee off Thursday and play one hole or a few shots and then withdraw after taking someone’s spot. You know, I just can’t do that. So, I’m going to have to withdraw from this one.”

Cody Martin of the United States has taken up his spot in the three-ball which includes last week’s winner in Mauritius Dylan Frittelli and Jazz Janewattananond of Thailand.
